Raphael Varane to Man United is ‘advanced’: report

Man United’s move for Raphael Varane is seemingly moving closer.

Manchester United Football Club are now starting to be linked with a move to sign Raphael Varane with more frequency. It does feel like an easy link to make, given the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is crying out for a long-term Harry Maguire partner.

The Frenchman has been in top form for Real Madrid this term, with United clearly eyeing Varane as someone who could fill a large void within this playing squad.

Journalist Jose Alvarez has given us his take on the situation. Apparently, United’s move for the 27-year-old is ‘advanced’, while Alvarez adds that Real Madrid are assuming he will not be renewing his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With a deal that has just over twelve months left to run, Madrid either have to sell Varane now and cut their losses – or risk losing him for nothing in 2022.

Varane is quick, physical, great in the air and a real leader. On paper, he has all the attributes of someone who could add an awful lot of quality to this side.

In terms of a transfer fee, he would be available for pretty cheap due to his deal winding down. Anything less than £50million and you’re getting an absolute bargain.

The problem for United is that defence is just one of many squad issues that need solving. With money likely to still be somewhat tight due to COVID-19, Solskjaer will have to choose where to spend big. Personally, I hope he chooses the back line, but a solid argument can be made for both striker and right-wing too.
