Raphael Varane will not play for Man United until the end of December following injury.
As Manchester United scored a late equaliser to rescue a point away at Chelsea, the game was marred by some sad scenes involving Raphael Varane.
The Frenchman was visibly in agony as he picked up an injury, leading United to substitute off the top-class centre-back midway through the second half.
Initially, you feared the worst. It felt like it could have been a season-ender. Well, I’m pleased to report that is not the case. However, the United star will not play for the Reds again until late-December due to the problem.
That’s according to ESPN, who believe the issue isn’t as bad as initially feared – which is obviously good news.
Apparently, Varane is set to miss three to four weeks of action, though he will not play for United before the World Cup. The Reds’ first game back following Qatar 2022 takes place on Boxing Day (December 26th).
Thankfully, Varane still has a chance at featuring for France at the World Cup, though it does leave Didier Deschamps with a decision to make, with Rapha set to miss at least the opener against Australia.
OTF’s verdict
This is obviously good news for United. Sure, it’s not ideal that he’ll miss the games leading up to the World Cup – but he should be fit and healthy upon the return of club football in a couple of months.
The question now becomes about his World Cup availability. From a selfish standpoint, I hope he doesn’t go as Varane is then given plenty of time to get back fully fit for his club.
That said, it’d be gutting if Varane misses out on playing in Qatar, so I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he is given a deserved call-up.
The only issue with Varane is that he’s always picking up these small injury problems. Just when you think he’s over the worst of them, another one strikes…
