Rasmus Hojlund has claimed that the San Marino players were purposely trying to hurt him during their match last night.

Fear not, Manchester United return this weekend with a game against Sheffield United! The Old Trafford club have been on two-week hiatus due to the international break.

Last night, Rasmus Hojlund was representing Denmark, as they took on San Marino. The United man would score as his side won 2-1, during a match that was a feisty affair.

After the encounter, the United man claimed he was ‘targeted’ by the opposition, who were purposely trying to cause him in an injury. Hojlund claimed he could hear what they were saying as he can speak Italian, and they had the idea to ‘crush’ him.

In the end, a nasty blow to his back was suffered, resulting in Hojlund being taken off late on in the game. The severity of the injury is not yet known.

Check out what Rasmus Hojlund had to say in full here:

“They targeted me today, as you can see at the end,” Hojlund said to the media after the game, per the MEN. “I understand Italian and I could hear them saying that they had the idea to crush me. And you can see from the images that he only had one idea in mind. A yellow card is a joke.”

These are the situations where you need that bit of extra protection from the referee. If Hojlund has made it known to the officials that he’s purposely being targeted, then his word has to be taken at face value.

The referee allowed it to go on by only booking the offender when Hojlund received a very nasty knee to the back. It was an act of the player purposely trying to inflict pain on Hojlund and there has to be some sort of punishment for that.

I’m all for a physical game, but intentional targeting is a step too far. Sadly, there’s now a chance that Hojlund may miss some game time due to the quick turnaround in between matches. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the gaffer says on Friday.

Do you think Rasmus Hojlund has what it takes to lead the line for Man United for many years? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
