Reason why Diego Godin turned down Manchester United revealed by player: report

Manchester United Football Club made a late move to try and sign Diego Godin on transfer deadline day.

Obviously, that move didn’t go through. Now, the Daily Mirror cites the Uruguay defender, who claims that he turned down a move to Old Trafford due to ‘personal reasons’ and not because he’d signed a bumper new deal with Atletico Madrid.

“I have not renewed,” Godin said.

“I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons and I am only thinking about the final.

“But I have not extended my contract.”

Well, at least this time we haven’t been used in order to get a better wage packet. It’s a tough decision when thinking about potentially uprooting your family to a new country, but when you have literally an hour or two to make your mind up, it gets even harder.

You can’t fault Godin for sticking with what he knows, particularly at the ripe old age of 32. There is no doubt that the centre-half would have been a stunning addition had he made the move, he would’ve sured up our defence from the get-go. However, you have to respect the decision, and that’s that.

Let’s be honest, if Mourinho really wanted Godin that badly, he would have launched any potential bid for him before taking a look at Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire et al…
