Rhys Bennett wins Man United Scholar of the Year award for 2021/22

Man United’s Rhys Bennett has been named our Scholar of the Year for the 2021/22 campaign.

FA Youth Cup glory was delivered by Manchester United’s young Reds for the first time in over a decade this season. I’d go as far as saying that the final was the most enjoyable game I’ve watched at any level this term.

That’s a credit to the spirit, effort, desire and drive that the U18 side have played with all year long. It’s Alejandro Garnacho who enjoyed all the headlines following our 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest. Though there were many other impressive performances.

None more so than captain Rhys Bennett. The local lad set the tone in the first half by scoring a powerful header to give his side the lead. He’d then go on to enjoy a monstrous performance at centre-back, winning absolutely every aerial duel and tackle that came his way for the rest of the match. It really was an absolute joy to watch him defend with genuine pride.

Well, Bennett has been rewarded for his efforts – both on and off the field this term. The United starlet was named Scholar of the Year for the 2021/22 term, with the young man all-smiles with his award. Though I’m not sure why they made him stand next to the Premier League trophy with blue ribbons on…

So what is the Scholar of the Year? Well:

‘The award is a Premier League initiative which sees a player selected by club staff who has excelled at all aspects of their scholarship, including development on the pitch, attitude to education, professionalism and personal development.’

Simply put, Bennett has not only shone on the pitch, but he’s also a superb young man off it, in pretty much every aspect of his life. This is exactly why he is the perfect captain for the U18s at this point in time.

I just love seeing effort rewarded and Bennett deserves all the plaudits that are coming his way right now. No doubt his family and friends are so proud of all his achievements at this young stage of his career.

The 18-year-old will now be thinking about taking that next step. Be it a jump up to U23 football next term, or perhaps even a loan move away, Bennett is at the perfect place to develop at his own pace. I will definitely be a keen onlooker of his over the next year or so.

Congratulations, Rhys!
