Rio Ferdinand earns England call-up

Last year Roy Hodgson refused to include Rio Ferdinand in the England squad for the European Champions due to ‘footballing reasons’, and after putting in some absolutely superb performances for United this season the defender has forced his way back into Hodgson’s plans. A call-up that is more than deserved.

The England squad contains seven United players including Ashley Young, who has missed the most recent international fixtures due to injury. There is also a spot for Chris Smalling who has taken the place of Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott in the 26-man squad.

Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Ben Foster (West Brom), Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Celtic).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), James Milner (Manchester City), Leon Osman (Everton), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Manchester United).
