Manchester United have been struggling for large parts of the campaign this term, so much so that Louis van Gaal’s side were dumped out of the Champions League and into the Europa League for a third place finish in their group.
Rio Ferdinand has always been one of the first to defend United when criticised, and now the former Old Trafford hero believes Louis van Gaal now has to focus on winning the Europa League as it guarantees a spot in the Champions League now.
“Europa League is a route into the CL so it takes on even more importance, MUFC really need to take it seriously.” The Manchester United legend said.
At the end of the day, Manchester United simply have to be playing in the Champions League. A club with our stature and presence on the global stage have to be competing in all of the major competitions, and we’re clearly struggling at the moment.
This is the first year where winning the Europa League guarantees you a place in the Champions League the following season, and although they’ll be plenty of tough matches from now until May, Louis van Gaal’s side are certainly capable of going all the way.
