Rio Ferdinand retires from professional football

Manchester United paid £29million for Rio Ferdinand way back in 2002, and he went on to become one of the finest defenders we’ve ever seen grace the colours of United throughout the club’s history. Today, at 36, Rio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from professional football.

Rio Ferdinand played over 450 games for United and won it all during his time at the club, including six Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one Champions League and three League Cup crowns.

Unfortunately he left Unitedin somewhat dodgy circumstances a year ago, and moved to QPR – a side who got relegated this year.

With all thats gone on in his personal life, now is probably the best time for him to call time on his illustrious career and hang up his boots for good.

For me, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic is without doubt the best centre-back pairing we’ve been blessed to watch in the Premier League, and it was brilliant to see them play to such a high standard week-in week-out.

All the best in you’re future career, Rio!
