Ahead of Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial tonight, the 34-year old centre-back is full of praise for Manchester United, claiming that he fell in love with winning at this club. Rio is one of the senior members in the side now, and in 11 years has won six Premier League titles – he also scored the last Old Trafford goal under Fergie.
The England defender admitted that he thought he’d only be at United for three or four years before moving abroad, but stated he grew to love the club and knew he wanted to finish his career at Old Trafford.
“When I look at pictures ahead of the testimonial, it evokes memories and it has relit the fires a little bit in terms of winning things.
“Whether I can do it, we’ll have to wait and see. But I’ve still got that burning passion to win things.
“I thought I’d be at United for a couple of years, maybe three or four, and then go abroad somewhere.
“But I just fell in love with United – the winning and the history of the club – and the pull has got stronger as the years have gone by.”
We paid a massive £29.1m for Rio back in 2002, but he has been worth every single penny. He has been a mainstay in the United starting line-up ever since. He fully deserves his testimonial tonight, and he’ll go down as a club legend once he retires.
