Rio Off To China?

With growing speculation regarding Rio’s future, the Guardian are running a story claiming that there is a ‘big chance’ Rio will be leaving United in the summer. They also state Rio is seriously considering following Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka to China for a big payday before he retires.

The 34-year old has apparently told friends he has no intention of retiring yet, and should be not renew his contract at United a move abroad would be the most likely option. United will probably offer Rio a one-year contract extension, but can you really blame him if he accepts a longer deal and a big payout from another club before he retires? Probably not.

A few weeks ago Fergie was pressed about the matter and he backed his defender stating that he can probably continue for another few years yet. “I think Rio can play for two or three more years.” The boss said. “He is not as quick as he was but that is not a big issue for me. His experience is important and there is no reason he can’t stay on. I didn’t even realise his contract was up.”

Rio has been an integral part of our defence this season so far, he and Sir Alex have seemingly worked out a way of managing his fitness and not overplaying him, and it’s certainly paying off with some solid performances.

Only time will tell in this situation, Ferdinand is on a reported £130,000 a week at United so the defender running down his contract and leaving on a free in the summer may be the best move for both parties, we’ll have to wait and see.
