Rio Ferdinand will play his testimonial game for completing over ten years of service with the club tonight – a testimonial which is fully deserved for probably the best centre-back to play under Sir Alex Ferguson. We want to recap some of his best moments here.
Last Minute Winner vs Liverpool – January 22nd 2006.
As the clock struck 90:00 the ball hit the back of the net and the Stretford End erupted. United struggled for most of the game with Giggs and O’Shea in centre midfeild. Not winning a corner to the 87th minute. But in true United style a last minute winner came from the most unlikely of sources. Who could forgot Gary Nevilles legendary reaction in the aftermath!
Screamer vs Liverpool! – Sunday 22nd October 2006.
The game marked a milestone for Paul Scholes as he made his 500th appearance for the reds. It was fitting that he got the opener and it seemed like he would go on and claim the day. Rio Ferdinand however hadn’t read the script. After an attempted clearance by Jamie Carragher in the 66th minute Rio expertly took the ball down with his right, skinning John Arne Riise and the process, and smashed an unstoppable left footed shot into the top corner.
Winner against Swansea in Sir Alex OT Farwell – 12th May 2013.
What is it with Rio and cracking goals at the Stretford End? He was at it again to give Sir Alex a winning send off from Old Trafford. An unstoppable volley that nearly broke the net, the celebration afterwards showed how much it meaned to the players to win the match for Sir Alex.
Rio Ferdinand deserves a packed Old Trafford tonight for his excellent performances down the years, and he probably only has two more years left at the top level so when he does retire it’ll be sad to see him go.
Enjoy it Rio!
