Robert Sanchez emerges as ‘potential’ Man United target in goalkeeper position

Robert Sanchez has now been identified as a possible option for Man United in the goalkeeper spot.

At this moment in time, Manchester United’s biggest need is a new goalkeeper. David de Gea has left the club on a free transfer, while Erik ten Hag continues to assess his options in terms of a replacement.

Andre Onana is the name most linked with filling that void, though with money being tight, the Old Trafford side could look elsewhere.

The Daily Mail have provided the latest on the Reds’ hunt for a shot-stopper, throwing another name into the mix; Robert Sanchez.

According to their report, the 25-year-old goalkeeper has ’emerged as a potential target’ for United this summer.

Sanchez has fallen out of favour at Brighton, following the form of Jason Steele coupled with the signing of young goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton would be looking for around £30m to let Sanchez, who enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 season, leave.

The full Spain international was arguably among the best keepers in the league before being displaced as number one, though I do worry about the fact he’s suddenly third choice at Brighton. Is he really going to be good enough for United?

If this was a stop-gap move at a cheap transfer fee, I’d consider it for a year or so. However, £30m is no drop in the ocean. If the club spend that much on Sanchez, they’d need top-class performances week-in-week-out.

The weird thing is that Sanchez would be an upgrade on De Gea. I just don’t like the fact that this would be a signing where United are settling, rather than going out there and getting an elite level footballer like Onana.
