Robin van Persie to miss the start of the season

Manchester United’s Robin van Persie will miss the start of the Premier League season, claims Steve Bates of the Sunday People. The Dutch striker is reportedly returning to training on Monday, but it is believed that Louis van Gaal wants the 30-year old to have thirty days of training under his belt like everyone else.

Van Persie himself is desperate to feature in the opening game as you’d expect, but Louis van Gaal is wary of the fact that burnout could way be a factor in the latter stages of the season.

Lets be honest, Van Persie doesn’t have the best record with injuries, so giving him a rest after such a gruelling World Cup is certainly a good idea. Like all players, Robin needs his richly deserved break, and if you look at the opening fixtures I think we’ll be able to cope without him for a few games.

Van Gaal said: “Robin wants to play every game, I know that, but so do the other 30 players in the squad. But players have to train and Robin needs a full training regime behind him before he can play again.”

“Robin will begin training on Monday, but he won’t play in the friendly against Valencia on August 12, definitely not.

“And he won’t play in the Premier League at the start either, I think. People can criticise me for that decision but I know what you have to do with players who have had three weeks’ holiday.

“Hopefully, Robin will get his fitness back very fast. But at this moment, he won’t be playing.”
