When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge at Manchester United, Marcus Rashford was immediately installed as the first-choice striker.
That left Romelu Lukaku having to play a bit-part role, mostly filling in when Rashford was either rested or injured. When a player costs £75million, they’re not going to be happy used as a rotational option. Seemingly, that’s the case here.
According to Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (print edition, Tuesday), translated by the brilliant Sport Witness, it is being claimed that Lukaku has ‘officially’ asked to leave United this summer.
Apparently, the 26-year-old has reached out to the 20-time Premier League champions as he wants to try something new. United’s #9 feels his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end due to the fact that he’s no longer the first-choice option.
It’s worth noting that Lukaku is United’s leading scorer since arriving at the club in 2017. The Belgium international has struck 42 times in 96 appearances, but for whatever reason, the fans never fully took to the ex-Everton man.
The frontrunners for his signature right now appear to be Inter Milan. Antonio Conte was keen on signing Lukaku during his time at Chelsea and now you get the impession that he’s pushing just as hard to sign him this time around.
