Manchester United’s summer transfer window was one to forget. Jose Mourinho only added three players to the senior playing squad, while remaining at loggerheads with Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman made public his desire to leave Old Trafford, however, the former AS Monaco man didn’t get his wish. It looks as though the 22-year-old will remain a Red Devil until January at the very earliest.
Now, club legend Ryan Giggs has had his say on the situation and he believes the man who took #11 jersey from the Welshman should come back with a positive attitude and fight to regain his place in the starting line-up.
“I hope Anthony Martial comes back and fights for his team and once the transfer window closes in Europe then hopefully he will be able to concentrate on his football.” Giggs told reporters, including the Daily Express.
“We have seen glances of his qualities, which are definitely there, but it’s up to him to prove he deserves a starting place again.”
It’s an odd situation. Mourinho knows the player wants to leave, so why should he give him the playing time? However, we also know how good Martial is. There is no doubt that he has a part to play in our push for silverware.
I guess it’s down to Martial and his attitude. If he shows a willingness to work, don’t be surprised to see Mourinho rediscover that trust and faith in him. It could well be a long road back, though, with the Frenchman not featuring in the match-day squad that beat Leicester City last time out.
