Manchester United’s struggles continued at the weekend. The Red Devils were outplayed by a visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers side who, on another day, could have quite easily scooped all three points.
Jose Mourinho has amassed ten points from a possible eighteen, while United are already eight points off top spot. Right now, he’s probably not even thinking about a title, rather looking at the distinct possibility that even a top-four finish may be beyond the Old Trafford club this term.
That’s clearly a view echoed by Sam Allardyce. The ex-England boss has admitted his worries regarding United, while also suggesting that it may be due to participation in European competition.
“I think that at the moment the one of the top six that has the biggest worry at the moment is probably Man United.” Allardyce told talkSPORT, per the Daily Express.
“I wouldn’t like to say at the moment but it’s going to be a struggle if they’re not careful to finish in the top four.
“I think that’s going to be devastating for Man United and Jose, but it’s still a bit early to tell.
“There were signs they were on the right track, they had a comfortable win in Europe.
“But maybe that European game has affected some of the players on Saturday.”
Allardyce further went on to suggest that Champions League participation may be the big factor. Honestly, I’m not sure I buy it. I mean yes, the trip would have had some effect, but these players are seasoned professionals, they’re used to playing twice a week, it’s what they’ve done for the majority of their careers.
The whole club, from top to bottom, just isn’t performing anywhere near as well as it should be. From Edward Woodward and the whole transfer debacle, to Mourinho’s mismanagement to several players underperforming.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson packed it in, we’ve only seen glimpses of positive signs, whereas the vast majority of the football has been pretty poor. Things will have to change pretty quickly if we’re to win major honours this term, but I agree with Big Sam, we have every reason to be worried.
