Sam Johnstone is Man United’s first choice option for keeper signing: report

Man United have identified Sam Johnstone as a prime transfer target ahead of the summer window.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is looking in brilliant shape at the moment, there are still a few key holes that need filling.

One that’s not amongst the big issue areas is goalkeeper, though Manchester United may be forced to move for a new shot-stopper. Sergio Romero looks dead-set to be on his way out, while David de Gea isn’t going to want to hang around and play second-fiddle on the substitutes bench.

Yesterday, The Sun ran an exclusive story, claiming that two former Reds are being eyed by the Old Trafford club for potential returns; Sam Johnstone and Tom Heaton.

Apparently, the 28-year-old star Johnstone is United’s ‘clear number one target’ as the Reds look for experienced cover in a key position.

Johnstone would like some reassurance that he’d be offered regular playing time if he moved back to the theatre of Dreams – which could prove problematic if Henderson keeps up his brilliant form.

If a move for Johnstone isn’t possible, Heaton is in the frame for an Old Trafford return, after losing his place to Emi Martinez at Aston Villa.

Both players absolutely fit the bill. Both are great keepers within their own right, and if they moved back to Manchester, either would get their fair share of games in the cup competitions and in Europe.

A move for either would be relatively cheap, meaning if they were to sell De Gea, they’d probably profit, while saving an awful lot of money on wages as the Spaniard currently takes home in excess of £300,000-a-week.

Honestly, I like the idea.
