Scott McTominay back in training after missing last two games with injury

Scott McTominay is back in first-team training after missing the last couple of games with an injury issue.

Suddenly, Manchester United’s squad is looking rather healthy again. Alex Telles is over his bout of coronavirus, Luke Shaw is working towards full fitness while Paul Pogba is also back out on the grass.

Another player who has been sidelined recently is Scot McTominay. The midfielder has actually missed the last couple of games with an injury issue. However, he’s given United a boost ahead of the PSG home game by making his return to first-team training.

In McTominay’s absence, it’s Nemanja Matic who is often tasked with playing in that defensive midfield role. Against Southampton at the weekend, the Serb offered up a real mixed bag. After a poor first 45, Matic would bounce back in the second and play an absolute blinder.

One thing Matic doesn’t have is much mobility and energy. Against PSG, that’s exactly what you’re going to need, particularly in midfield. McTominay offers that in abundance and his return to the grass couldn’t have been any more timely.

I guess it’s now a case of whether McTominay is fit enough to go 90 minutes in what’s going to be a high-intensity game. You know the Scotland international will give it his absolute all if called upon, it’s just a question of whether his body will allow it.

Personally, I’d give him the start and re-assess the situation at half-time. McTominay with Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek sitting in front of him feels like the best midfield trio we have at the moment.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fred given the nod ahead of Van de Beek here, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be desperate for a result. And you could hardly blame him for sticking with what he knows…
