Scott McTominay couldn’t start against Southampton as he was struggling with an injury.
Manchester United were pretty underwhelming against Southampton yesterday. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came in for some criticism due to changing up the team.
Well, one of those changes was sadly enforced. Nemanja Matic came into the side for Scott McTominay, with the former playing a really disappointing match.
Sadly, McTominay, United’s key midfield star, didn’t start because he was struggling with an injury. The Scotland international would come onto the field in the second half, but he definitely didn’t look like he was at 100% fitness.
“Of course we want to keep continuity [in the side],” Ole explained in his pre-match interview with Man United’s in-house channel.
“But Scott is struggling with an injury, hopefully we can get half an hour out of him if needed.”
I’d like to think that the injury wasn’t anything serious, otherwise risking McTominay off the bench wouldn’t have been the best idea our manager has ever had.
Was that enforced change the difference in the result? Probably not, but it’s fair to say Matic wasn’t very good at all. Hopefully, McTominay is back and available for selection away at Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend as we’re definitely going to need his mobility in that one.
I guess this just highlights United’s need to dip their toes into the midfield transfer market this summer. Defensively, we don’t have an awful lot of quality outside of McTominay and he cannot do it all on his own.
With time now running out before the window slams shut, I hope Solskjaer and The Glazers understand how important this need is. Sadly, Matic just can’t cut it at the top level anymore and outside of cup game against lower-level opposition, I’d prefer not to see him included in starting XIs this term.
Get well soon, Scott!
