Scott McTominay named The Athletic’s Young Player of the Year

Manchester United definitely feel like a team who’re on the rise as opposed to being on the decline. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves all the credit for that.

The Red Devils are building for the future, around a young core of players with the footballing world at their feet. With the season now on hiatus (for god knows how long), the question about who’ll be named the United award winners is starting to become a serious one.

Well, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has already made his pick for Young Player of the Year. He has opted for 23-year-old Scott McTominay; who is enjoying a stellar season.

The candidates for this one are jam-packed as this United squad is so young. You look at Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – all of which have been simply brilliant to watch.

McTominay, though, has been the model of consistency. He also excels in the leadership role, which is a vital part of any title-winning squad. I know it’s a bold comparison but I look at the Scotland international and see a young Roy Keane in some aspects.

Personally, I would go for Wan-Bissaka but I can’t knock Whitwell for this choice as McTominay would’ve definitely featured in my top three!
