Sergio Reguilon showed real character to fight through illness as Man United beat Burnley 1-0.
Manchester United knew it’d be a dogfight away at Burnley, with the Red Devils eventually coming away with all three points. It was a tight 1-0 victory, though the lads showed real courage and character, particularly after their poor run of results.
The game itself was as tight as you’d expect. United, underconfident and undermanned, Burnley buoyed by their home fans, making it a closer game than you’d have probably liked.
After the match, Ten Hag seemed happy with the victory, though knowing that his side will have to continue to improve going forward. The gaffer was also full of praise for Sergio Reguilon, with the United player suffering with an illness before kick-off.
The Spaniard fought through the problem to feature, as the Reds squeezed out a victory.
Here’s what Ten Hag had to say on Reguilon in full here:
“Reguilon was ill,” Ten Hag said live on TNT Sports, quoted by FourFourTwo. “And that says a lot about the character and the spirit that this team wants to show.“
“He wanted to play. He wanted to support and contribute to the team.”
Firstly, this explains why the left-back was subbed off for Rapha Varane with about 10 minutes to play. Perhaps his body just couldn’t stretch for the final portion of the match.
However, you have to admire the character and dedication. He knew that he was the only fit and available left-back. To put his body through the pain barrier for the good of the team says a lot about the man. Some of his teammates could learn a lot from that attitude.
Now, it’s a race against time to ensure Reguilon is fit for United’s midweek game against Crystal Palace. We’re going to need him.
