Well, after what feels like months of posturing and haggling over a fee, it feels like Manchester United are close to landing their man.
According to Sky Sports News, United have agreed an £80million deal to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.
The deal is subject to completion of a medical, though if it goes through, Maguire would become the most expensive defender in the world.
Maguire will now discuss personal terms with the Old Trafford club, with the Red Devils set to beat rivals Manchester City to the 26-year-old’s signature.
How long have United craved a top centre-back for? Well, all being well they’ll have one of the best defenders in the country for the 2019/20 season, although he won’t come cheap.
For me, the final fee doesn’t outweigh the need for United. Maguire is a top-class professional, an excellent footballer and a real on-field leader. We’re going to need him to set the example that others should follow as soon as he walks through the door.
Hopefully, we’re not waiting too long before personal terms are all sorted. There’s little-to-no chance Maguire will be signed before the AC Milan game tomorrow, so I wonder if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will throw him straight into the mix when Chelsea come to town in the Premier League opener?
