Manchester United’s midfield continues to look mightily thin on the ground, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer exploring his options as he looks to strengthen before the transfer deadline next month.
One name that just will not go away is that of Sean Longstaff. Sky Sports have given us another update on the midfielder’s future, as they claim that ‘high-level talks’ have taken place between Manchester United and Newcastle United; as the Red Devils consider signing the 21-year-old.
Apparently, no official bid has been made at this point, with the Magpies ‘categorically not interested’ in selling Longstaff, as they see the Geordie as a big part of their future plans.
Longstaff’s excellent breakthrough season was cruelly cut short due to the midfielder suffering knee ligament damage, but he was mightily impressive in his thirteen Premier League appearances that he did make.
It’s easy to look at this potential signing and feel underwhelmed, but I believe United see Longstaff as a replacement for Ander Herrera or Michael Carrick. I also hold out hope that the club are planning to make a move for a big-name attacking midfielder to potentially replace Paul Pogba should he be on the move.
You’d fully expect Newcastle to come out and state that they want Longstaff to stick around. At the very least, they’ll bump up his price a little more, if not put Manchester United off altogether – meaning they may well get their wish…
