Smalling, 29, only signed a new three-year contract recently, but along with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, the former Fulham man is seemingly in Solskjaer’s good books.
For me, Smalling is nothing more than a squad player, though he’s markedly better than both Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo who should be sold before him.
Right now, he’d be my third or fourth choice (it’s a toss-up between him and Axel Tuanzebe), but I still have faith in Smalling to do a job when needed. Perhaps if this was a permanent move then it would have been considering, particularly as Everton have been trying to splash the cash in the final few days of the transfer window.
