Just before the New Year, we covered a story from Sky Sports News in which it was claimed Manchester United had identified a new potential signing in SL Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes.
Today, Sky Sports News had another update for us. Apparently, the Portuguese club are now listening to offers for the talented 20-year-old United transfer target.
Furthermore, Benfica want an initial 18-month loan deal with an option to buy Fernandes outright. The player’s representatives have already been in the UK, having spoken to four clubs. Both Lyon and AC Milan have already made formal offers for the midfielder, though the player would prefer a move to the Premier League.
Having fallen out with Benfica’s Head Coach, Fernandes hasn’t featured in the last seven games. Despite the fact that the 20-year-old currently has a £102m release clause in his contract, though the Portuguese side have conceded they aren’t going to get such a fee for a player who currently isn’t in favour.
Fernandes isn’t someone I’m all-too-familiar with, though aged 20, there’s plenty of room to grow and we’re talking about someone who already has Portugal caps under his belt. The talent is obviously there, though I’m not quite sure where he’d fit into our system.
However, United do have a massive midfield need – particularly with both Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay currently out injured. It’s a tricky situation and one that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to manage correctly.
Does the Baby Faced Assassin stick it out until the summer? Or roll the dice and try and make a change now…
