Sky Sports: Callum Wilson, Mario Mandzukic high among Man United transfer targets

For anyone who has paid attention to Manchester United this season, their main problem has been sticking the ball in the back of the net.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has lacked in cutting edge in every game bar the opening day against Chelsea. Perhaps letting Romelu Lukaku leave without replacement was a big mistake, eh?

Anyway, Sky Sports News have some transfer claims for us on that front. They state that 27-year-old English striker, Callum Wilson, and experienced veteran, Mario Mandzukic, are high among United’s striker targets ahead of the January window.

Apparently, United are ‘continuing to monitor’ the pair, just a few months before the mid-season window opens…

First and foremost, the links to Wilson makes sense. Solskjaer has been keen on signing British players since taking charge, and the prolific AFC Bournemouth man has started this season in excellent fashion.

He wouldn’t come cheap, though, having three years left on his deal. Bournemouth won’t want to lose a prized asset and they’ll dig their heels in.

As for Mandzukic, his name popped up a fair bit over the summer. The 33-year-old has two years left on his contract, though you’d imagine he’d probably be easier to lure to Old Trafford…

January is a notoriously difficult time to buy but United’s hand has been forced due to their struggles in the summer. It’s an issue that needs rectifying immediately and quite frankly, the new year cannot come around quick enough…
