Sky Sports: Man United identify club icon as frontrunner for technical director job

Manchester United have been left behind in recent years. Perhaps a key part of that is the fact that they’ve remained without a technical director.

It finally seems as though this summer the Red Devils are going to employ someone in an effort to help out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Last night, Sky Sports ran a story claiming that the ‘leading candidate’ for the job is a familiar face…

Apparently, the man who is the frontrunner is none other than Darren Fletcher. Talks between the 35-year-old and the club have already taken place, with United looking for someone who can come in and work alongside Solskjaer.

Fletcher has been eyed as the man who can ‘act as the glue’ between manager and board, meaning he’s therefore not expected to be a transfer guru.

Amongst other names United are keen on is club legend Rio Ferdinand and RB Leipzig’s head of recruitment, Paul Mitchell.

Rather than bringing someone in who’s good when it comes to signing players, United are clearly trying to add someone to the team who knows what it means to work for United.

I feel as that’s probably the best way to approach it given how distant that dressing room has looked over the last twelve months, but there’s no pleasing everyone and some fans would have preferred someone like Sevilla’s Monchi who has been an absolute revelation over in Spain.

Fletcher knows this club inside-out, he’ll know Solskjaer personally, too, meaning the pair can work in tandem while hopefully having the same goals in mind.
