They say it’s the hope that kills you. Well, for Manchester United fans, they weren’t hopeful for very long in regards to the signing of Matthijs de Ligt.
According to Sky Sports News, the Red Devils have ruled themselves out of the running to sign the classy 19-year-old centre-half this summer.
De Ligt has been highly sought-after following an impressive season in the Dutch league, but there is a belief among the Old Trafford hierarchy that the defender is FC Barcelona-bound.
Although it would have been simply brilliant to have De Ligt wearing United colours next season, it always felt like an improbability.
The lack of Champions League football is a massive turn-off for superstars who could be on the move this summer – which gives our transfer rivals the upper hand.
Honestly, this could be the first of many players who turn United down due to their participation in the Europa League this term. That could potentially be turned into a positive though, as we’d be only signing players who want to wear the badge rather than making moves for mercenaries who only care about themselves.
I’m just glad that United have come out and briefed the media on this one relatively early so we’re not spending a whole summer talking about De Ligt.
