Sky Sports: Manchester United extend David de Gea’s contract at club

Manchester United Football Club have just given the fans something that they’ve been desperate to hear for quite some time; David de Gea has seen his contract extended by a further year.

According to Sky Sports News, the Red Devils have taken up the option within his current deal, which means the 28-year-old will now remain at Old Trafford until at least the summer of 2020.

Quite frankly, it’s something that they simply had to do before January rolled around, as that would have given overseas clubs the chance to discuss signing him on a free contract. Now, though, the ball is back in United’s court – albeit temporarily.

The obvious end goal is to ensure that De Gea stays here in the long-term and pens a new lengthy deal. The fact that United have activated this clause leads me to believe that so far, that has been largely unsuccessful.

That doesn’t mean the deal won’t get done eventually, though. Reports recently have suggested that De Gea’s camp is ready to put pen to paper; providing United match his ambition (presumably with a hefty wage packet). Honestly, just give him what he wants to stay and worry about the money later. We simply cannot afford to lose our best player at this point in time.
