Sky Sports pundit calls for Manchester United star to be banned for simulation

Over the weekend, Manchester United suffered arguably their most embarrassing loss this season, with Jose Mourinho’s men getting beat 1-0 by Newcastle United; a side that couldn’t buy a home league win recently.

Their goal came from the most bizarre situation, as Chris Smalling dived which led to a Newcastle free-kick. That, in turn, led to a goal from Matt Ritchie, giving the hosts all three points.

In the aftermath, Sky Sports pundit Tony Cottee has called for the FA to look at the Smalling incident, labelling his act of simulation ‘ridiculous’.

“I think the frustrating thing is that Craig Pawson has given him the yellow card and that’s the end of it,” Cottee said on Sky Sports, per the Daily Express.

“Whereas we are trying to stamp out simulation and diving.

“Surely the FA should look at that because it was ridiculous. “

“We’ve got to stop players doing that because he has not been touched.

“He’s a good player Chris Smalling but he knows he’s done wrong there.”

It was a poor dive, and in truth, it has summed up his season so far. He’s looked a shadow of the player we’ve seen in years gone by and it was an act that cost his team vital Premier League points.

However, I don’t see him being banned for the incident due to FA rules regarding simulation. With that said, don’t be surprised to see Jose Mourinho make Smalling sit out for a few games, because he’s been atrocious and honestly it’s probably best for him to watch on the sidelines for a while.

What’s concerning for me is that Smalling has been putting in these performances on and off all season, yet young Victor Lindelof makes one mistake and he’s been completely exiled from the side…
