Manchester United find themselves in a huge mess at present. Jose Mourinho is embroiled in a personal battle with Paul Pogba; which is overshadowing the on-field performance, which is what’s important.
Next up, the Red Devils visit a bogey ground; West Ham away. It’s a game in which United have notoriously struggled in. It couldn’t have come at a worse time either, with The Hammers winning their last game 8-0…
Anyway, Paul Merson has been making his usual weekly predictions, and he has plumped for a 1-1 draw – which is actually better than what I thought he’d say. The ex-Arsenal man has explained why he thinks that’s the case below:
“Man Utd are all over the place. Last week, they drew with Wolves at home and now they’re out of the cup, and West Ham have turned a corner.” Merson wrote, in his Sky Sports column.
“It’s not working between Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho, they don’t look happy. I’ve seen the video of Pogba coming onto the training pitch and Mourinho says something to him, so it isn’t good at all. With the results as well, it just gets blown up even more. If they had won their last two games, it wouldn’t be a problem, but they’re out of the title race and out of one of the cups already which they had a chance of winning. For me, it’s worrying times at Man Utd now.”
It is indeed worrying times. The worst part? Merson’s right when he says we’re already out of the title race. Eight points adrift just six games in is the worst possible start. I fear things are only going to get worse…
What’s needed is the pair to fix their personal issues, or at least put them to one side for the good of the team. Let’s face it, unless Mourinho is sacked, these two are going to be working together until January at the very earliest, that’s three long months away.
They don’t have to be friends, they just have to tolerate each other. Maybe their big egos are preventing them from doing exactly that, and at this point, I wouldn’t be fussed if both were relieved of their respective duties, because it’s an insufferable situation.
