Sofyan Amrabat finally proving his worth, but is it a little too late?

Fiorentina midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat, has started to show his qualities at Man United, but has a decision already been made?

Manchester United returned to winning ways yesterday evening, against a Newcastle United side who were in form before their visit to Old Trafford. No doubt this was a nice confidence-booster for a dressing room that has struggled over the last month or so.

Beating The Magpies 3-2 could be the positive momentum swing Erik ten Hag needed, too, with the Red Devils playing some good stuff at times. It was all started by a commanding midfield performance – an area where the Reds have largely struggled recently.

Kobbie Mainoo has been consistently solid since his inclusion in the side, though over the last couple of weeks, he has had help from Sofyan Amrabat.

The man from Morroco was signed on loan on transfer deadline day. I was super excited to have him due to his defensive qualities and work rate. However, we never really saw any of that – until United’s two most recent games.

Amrabat looked great against Arsenal, putting in the defensive effort and providing a foundation for the midfield to build on from. He’d then back that up with an even better performance against Newcastle in midweek.

Although the 27-year-old Man United man is finally starting to prove his worth, it may already be a little too late with a decision already made on his future…

By all accounts, Amrabat will head back to Fiorentina this summer after what has been an unsuccessful loan move, but I’m just pleased he’s showing what he can do. So-much-so that there’s now a real possibility he starts in the FA Cup final against Manchester City in a week or so…

Amrabat has started to look that defensive beast we all witnessed in the Qatar World Cup eighteen months ago. It’s unfortunate it has taken so long, but you have to give him credit, as it would have been so easy for him to just mail it in and wait for his next career move.

The defensive effort was on full display against Newcastle, as he made a crucial block late on to deny our opponents in a situation that felt like a certain goal. This is the player we all thought we were getting. Time and time again, Amrabat had real command of the midfield, providing the aforementioned Mainoo with some excellent help during crucial stages of the match. It’s no surprise that the Englishman had his best game in a few weeks alongside Amrabat.

What’s gutting is the fact that Amrabat has been here for a year and we’d all given up completely already. He can do it. He’s shown that against two of the best teams in the country. Even after the game, the midfield maestro stated that he’s not even at his 100% best yet due to a lack of playing time. It does make you wonder how good he can be, and whether or not he’s worth the punt on a permanent deal?

I know I’m somewhat jumping the gun here, but Amrabat is now familiar with the club. Casemiro is likely to leave and too much change in one position in one transfer window can have a negative effect due to unfamiliarity. Signing Amrabat permanently isn’t going to cost much more than £10m. If he finishes the season strong, I reckon it’s probably a wise piece of business…

Do you think there’s any way Sofyan Amrabat remains at the club beyond the summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
