Sofyan Amrabat refuses to close door on Man United stay

FA Cup final unsung hero, Sofyan Amrabat, may well stay at Man United beyond the summer after all.

Manchester United ended arguably their worst season in recent history by lifting the FA Cup trophy. Honestly, that’s some damn fine accomplishment given the turbulent season that Erik ten Hag and this group of players had.

Beating Manchester City 2-1 in the final, and deserving it no less, will live long in my memory. It was a quality performance from a group of players who have disappointed all season. They did show their capabilities and to Ten Hag’s credit, the game plan was perfect

For me, Sofyan Amrabat was the unsung hero. The man from Morocco was used sparingly all season, though he would start the last few games and we would finally get to see his class in that defensive midfield role. Against City, he was an absolute monster, covering every blade of grass and showing his immense quality.

Prior reports had suggested that United’s mind was already made up and Amrabat would be heading back to Fiorentina upon the expiry of his loan. However, the United star could yet remain at Old Trafford, according to the man himself…

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Amrabat said:

“Do I already know what I’m going to do next year? No. We are going to talk. Staying is certainly an option. Look, I think it has been a very difficult season. For Manchester United it needs to be much better, and also for me personally. We are going to talk. Manchester United are the biggest club in the world, so who wouldn’t want to play football here? But all parties have to be happy with each other, so we will sit down now and see what happens.”

The fee to sign Amrabat permanently is around the £17m mark. After watching him this last month or so, I would understand it if United chose to activate that clause and add him to the squad for good. He can do a job. We’ve all seen it.

With Christian Eriksen and Casemiro having futures that are far from secure, it could be smart to bring in the man from Fiorentina, though we’ll just have to wait and see whether Ten Hag wants him, also whether INEOS will sanction that sort of budget to keep Amrabat here.

The fact that the door is still open must be super encouraging for Amrabat though. He’s probably been begging for a real run in the side to prove his worth and he’s done exactly that as soon as he was given the opportunity to start a few games in a row. Perhaps it’s a little too late, but in football, you just never know…
