Marcus Rashford, check. Axel Tuanzebe, check. Andreas Pereira, check. Manchester United have been busy sealing contract renewals this summer, but there’s still one big one left…
David de Gea is now into the last twelve months of his current Red Devils deal. The latest story we covered came on July 7th from the Sunday Mirror, who claimed that the world-class Spaniard was set to sign a new £350,000-a-week contract; keeping him at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
Well today, in his first pre-match press conference of United’s tour in Australia, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave us a direct update on the Spaniard’s future – and to me, it all felt as though it were heading in the right direction which is great news…
“David’s had a summer now where he’s been negotiating and thinking about his contract, so we hope that we’re going to get it sorted soon.” Solskjaer is quoted as saying by ManUtd.com.
“I’m positive. Of course, with David, I’ve said many a time how lucky I am, and how happy we are, to have him in the goal. So we hope he stays here for many years.”
The Baby Faced Assassin is certainly feeling confident of tying down, and honestly, the sooner this contract saga is over the better it’ll be for all involved. For me, it wasn’t a coincidence that De Gea’s form began to dip at the end of the season, as the player’s future wasn’t secure.
From United’s perspective, they should pay the man whatever he wants. He’s been the only consistent member of that squad for the last half-decade, and it’d be just unfair on him if he was the one to miss out on the big-money contract.
I think the fact that Dean Henderson hasn’t gone on tour is pretty telling, too. United must feel assured that De Gea is sticking around for this season at least, otherwise the 22-year-old Englishman would have surely been aboard the plane to Australia?
