Solskjaer confirms Man United defensive duo to make injury returns tonight

Manchester United’s injury crisis has been well documented, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer probably feeling like the issue simply isn’t letting up.

Well today, the Baby Faced Assassin finally gave us some good news on that front. Solskjaer confirmed that two long-term absentees, Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah, will make their return from injury this evening for United’s U23s, who are taking on Newcastle United. The news was confirmed by the BBC’s Simon Stone earlier today.

With United’s defence struggling in terms of quality and numbers, this is no doubt a welcome relief for our Norweigan leader – who only had two senior centre-halves fit for the Manchester derby on Tuesday.

Bailly picked up his injury during a pre-season game against Tottenham Hotspur in pre-season. He hasn’t featured since but at least he’s now back out on the training field and ready to get himself involved.

Fosu-Mensah is another who’s had ligament issues, though he picked up the problem while on loan with Fulham. I’d genuinely forgotten he was still at the club if I’m honest – though under Louis van Gaal he was a useful option during his breakthrough season. Whether he can rediscover that form remains to be seen.

Understandably, these guys are going to need time, hence why they’re being reintroduced slowly via the U23s. Hopefully, they can both come through tonight’s game unscathed and start to kick it up a notch…
