Solskjaer confirms Mason Greenwood will get more chances following Rashford injury

Manchester United Football Club find themselves in crisis. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is looking thinner than ever following injuries, with the Baby Faced Assassin practically operating with one hand behind his back.

Marcus Rashford has recently been added to an ever-growing list of players sidelined in the long-term and yesterday, we covered a story from the MEN which claimed youngsters could now see their minutes increase in the wake of the news.

Solskjaer addressed that news directly in his pre-Burnley press conference this morning – confirming that Mason Greenwood is going to get more chances, while we’ll also see much more of Juan Mata for the foreseeable future, too.

“It might be too early for them [Mellor & Ramazani etc] yet, of course, Mason’s gonna get more chances now.” Solskjaer told reporters including ManUtd.com. “Juan will have to step up again, there’ll be more chances for ones in the squad, we know we’re stretched for numbers but we’ll cope with that.”

Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but this hints to me that Solskjaer isn’t really planning on signing anyone this month and instead, giving youth a chance once again.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m always down to see more youngsters given their opportunities but sometimes, there’s a limit and you need to focus on high quality rather than homegrown talent. We’re in the January window, go out and pay whatever it takes to give United the best chance at securing a top-four finish.

I’m sure Greenwood will flourish being exposed to more first-team action. However, he and Anthony Martial are the only fit strikers on the books right now. Imagine one of them gets injured on February 1st (after the window closes) and then we’re down to just one forward. It just doesn’t seem like a smart business plan…
