Solskjaer confirms three players won’t travel for Europa League through injury

Manchester United have been hit with a trio of injury problems ahead of the Europa League quarter-final against Copenhagen. None of the three players will travel for the tournament.

Yes, that’s right. The travelling party for the game was spotted earlier today, while over in Germany, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conducted his usual pre-match press conference.

Amongst the topics of discussion was what sort of team would the Baby Faced Assassin have at his disposal. Well, now we know that three players have been left behind; Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and Luke Shaw.

We knew that we wouldn’t see either Tuanzebe or Shaw again this season, though Jones’ inclusion in the provisional squad offered us some hope. Now, the manager has ruled the centre-half out…

“We’ve travelled with a big squad. Phil [Jones], Axel [Tuanzebe], and Luke [Shaw] are the three we left behind.” Solskjaer told reporters, including the Manchester Evening News.

Defensive injury woes

What’s concerning is that all these problems are across the back line, including two centre-halves. An injury to Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly could spell disaster…

Brandon Williams is now the only recognisable left-back in the squad. Sure, Timothy Fosu-Mensah can play out there, but it’s not his natural position and is he really good enough?

Furthermore, you look at how injury-prone the likes of both Fosu-Mensah and Bailly have been. It hardly breeds confidence now, does it?

With a five-day gap in between games, I’d like to think United will have enough in the tank to get the job done. However, we have to be somewhat concerned given how dead on their feet our players looked in the Premier League.

It’s now somewhat down to luck, but if United can field their best team, game-in-game-out, they’ve every chance at going all the way in this tournament.

Will these Europa League injury problems curtail United’s chances at winning the tournament? What do you reckon?
