Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thinking about calling both James Garner and Teden Mengi up into the senior Manchester United squad.

Manchester United’s mantra has always been to develop academy graduates using the academy. From the likes of Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, to Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe.

Sometimes, youngsters have to go out on loan to make their case to be in the senior squad at Old Trafford. This year, a couple of players have seemingly done exactly that; James Garner and Teden Mengi.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer is ‘considering bringing the impressive United duo into the first-team following top loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Derby County respectively.

However, they could also be loaned out again, depending on what moves United make in the transfer market.

It’s expected that both Garner and Mengi will link up with the senior squad for pre-season, before a decision is then made on their short-term futures. Neither will be short of options though, it seems…

The Manchester Evening News also claim that Garner and Mengi could remain at their respective loan clubs for another season, with both Championship sides impressed with what they saw from the young Reds duo.

In an ideal world, if the pair were shipped out again for another year, Premier League clubs would come forward and offer them regular playing time in the top flight for twelve months.

Here at Old Trafford Faithful, we’ve raved about Garner for years. We still believe the Englishman should already be in the first-team fold at United and I’m still not sure what Fred offers that Garner doesn’t.

Mengi is a little more raw as a footballer, though the ability is obviously there. I would expect United to sign a top-class centre-back this summer, though, so that makes his path to regular minutes that little bit tougher.

  1. If that’s the case then many people will inevitably draw the conclusion that their are insufficient transfer funds being made available to plug the obvious holes in the squad and, therefore, the likelihood is that only one or two Marquee, headline grabbing, fan placating, signings will be made…or attempted…or be seen to be attempted…you can never take it for granted with the Glazers, Woodward, Judge etc.
