Manchester United Football Club had an excellent pre-season tour. It was based upon doing what the Reds do best; giving youth a chance to flourish on the highest stage.
Arguably the top performer on tour was Angel Gomes, while James Garner also made an excellent impact as he scored with practically his first touch against Leeds United.
Since the start of the Premier League, we haven’t seen either of the midfield duo involved within the first-team setup. Instead, the pair have both been playing U23s football. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked directly about when we’ll see Garner and Gomes within the first-team – and he revealed their opportunities will start to come next month.
“When we get to September and October, the midweek games in the Europa League and Carabao Cup, the league and then the [Emirates] FA Cup will start of course, we’ll definitely see Jimmy [Garner].” Solskjaer said per The Metro.
“He’s done really well in the Reserves. And Angel, definitely you’ll see more of him.”
It does make sense. United will be playing a high number of games from September onwards and it is the ideal chance to give these youngsters some all-important minutes. Don’t forget about Mason Greenwood and Tahith Chong, too. These guys should also get minutes in the not too distant future.
I genuinely believe that Gomes is ready. Word on the grapevine is that he’s with the squad for the game against Crystal Palace today, but it’s a long-shot that he’ll start. As for Garner, he’s my favourite and most talented young player on the books at Old Trafford at the moment – and with midfield being an area in which United are light in, don’t be surprised to see Jimmy make an impact!
