Solskjaer explains why Angel Gomes wasn’t involved against Rochdale

Manchester United managed to squeeze past a spirited Rochdale side at Old Trafford last night, though the overriding feeling was one of disappointment.

The game itself was just poor throughout, despite a couple of great individual displays from Axel Tuanzebe and Mason Greenwood. However, there was one or two notable absentees…

Neither Angel Gomes or Diogo Dalot were included within the squad, which was met with confusion. Were they injured? Were they dropped? Well, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shed some light on their absences, as it seems both are carrying injuries…

“They haven’t trained last couple days, unfortunately. Hopefully back for Alkmaar next week.” Solskjaer responded when asked about Gomes and Dalot, per journalist Rich Fay (MEN).

Thankfully, though, neither problem is apparently all that serious as the manager is hopeful the pair are back for next week.

It’s a massive shame, for Gomes in particular. The attacking midfielder has been patiently waiting for his opportunity and to have it taken away from him due to spending time on the treatment table is just awful luck.

While on tour, Gomes showed that he has what it takes to unlock defences with those defence-splitting runs and inch-perfect passes. That was dearly missed yesterday.

As for Dalot, well, I’m becoming rather concerned. He spent the summer injured, and after just one game, he’s back to being unavailable. We’ll have to keep an eye on this one…
