Solskjaer given ‘perfect opportunity’ to move forward with Dean Henderson

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given the chance to move forward with Dean Henderson as his number one, or so Michael Owen claims.

The Englishman looked mightily composed on his Premier League debut for Manchester United at the weekend, making a couple of important saves in the process. He’d send a classy message to the fans shortly after full-time, too…

After back-to-back brilliant campaigns while on loan at Sheffield United, Henderson’s stock has continued to rise. So-much-so that there were calls for the shot-stopper to immediately come in and replace De Gea.

The Baby Faced Assassin would stick with the superstar Spaniard, though with De Gea picking up an injury this weekend, the chance arose for Henderson – who couldn’t have done any better.

Now, according to pundit Michael Owen, it’s claimed that Solskjaer has been given the perfect chance to make the bold team selection choice and move forward with Henderson on a permanent basis…

Check out what Michael Owen had to say here:

“If you are thinking about changing the goalkeeper, this is the time.” Owen is quoted as saying live on Premier League TV, quoted by the Manchester Evening News liveblog.

“I don’t think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants confrontation, I don’t think he wants to drop him.

“But in this situation all of a sudden, ‘hey, you went off injured and he has done nothing wrong’.

“It is the perfect opportunity.. If he had any of those thoughts over the last few months when mistakes were made, now is your time.”

You do get the feeling that this is the time, though with De Gea’s injury only being a minor one, it would certainly feel harsh on someone who has been an incredible servant for this club.

It also does feel like only a matter of time, however. Henderson is quickly closing the gap on De Gea and soon enough, he’ll surpass the current United number one.

Henderson is better at commanding his area and claiming crosses. The Englishman is also excellent with the ball at his feet. I’m not sure he’s as good-a-shot-stopper as Spanish Dave, but he’s definitely not too far off.

Perhaps the permanent switch won’t happen this time. But I’d be surprised if he doesn’t happen before the end of the season…
