Solskjaer heaps praise on ‘outstanding’ McTominay after Villareal game

Although we’re walking up disappointed this morning, one player can hold his head high; Scott McTominay.

Manchester United’s Scotland international was one of very few players who performed to their capabilities last night. It’s ironic because he’s one of the guys who often cops for the most stick from fans.

On the night, though, McTominay was the star man out there in Red Devils colours. He’d make those marauding runs forward, always take the right passing option and work his socks off defensively. It was a display to be proud of.

We’re hurting this morning, but the 24-year-old deserves all the praise that’s heading his way. Some of that came from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who labelled the United star as the best player on the pitch.

‘I thought Scott McTominay was absolutely outstanding out there. He was, for me, the best player on the pitch.’ Solskjaer told the media, including The Metro.

It’s hard to disagree. Edinson Cavani and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were both pretty good, too, but McTominay put in one of his best outings of the season.

Going into a summer transfer window, it always felt to us like McTominay was amongst those whose place in the starting line-up was in danger. Perhaps last night changed Solskjaer’s mind in that regard, with the priority now probably a centre-half or right-winger.

I know we’d all prefer to be celebrating a trophy this morning and the performance, on the whole, was a massively disappointing one. However, we have to take pride in an academy graduate performing so well on the European stage. This club developed a midfielder who is capable of going toe-to-toe with the best on the continent and I’m happy that we at least got to see that from McTominay last night.

Sadly now, it’s back to the drawing board for this United squad and coaching staff. It’s going to be a long old summer mulling over this heartbreaking loss, but the good news in football is that you always get another chance.
