A loan move away from Manchester United for Brandon Williams may well be in the offing come January…
The Harpurhey-born full-back would burst onto the scene for Manchester United last season, playing almost thirty appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.
However, the 2020/21 term has been a completely different term for Brandon Williams. He’s featured in just two games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
The obvious reason behind that is Alex Telles’ addition. The Brazilian brings a maturity to the table, with Telles directly competing with Luke Shaw for that starting left-back slot.
It felt like Williams would transition over to the right-back side due to Diogo Dalot departing from Old Trafford. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has played all-but-two games this term and he’s rarely injured unlike the aforementioned Shaw (which is why Williams was given his chance).
Now, Solskjaer has hinted at a loan move away for the United first-teamer when January rolls around…
Check out what Solskjaer had to say here:
“Brandon has done really well since he came into the team,” Solskjaer told reporters, including the Manchester Evening News. “He had a slow start to the season for different reasons. I think he’s now coming back to himself. I can see more Brandon being Brandon again.
“I’ve enjoyed seeing him, I’ve enjoyed him more in training, he’s played a couple of 23s games and has been more involved.
“That’s something we’ll look at in January but we highly rate Brandon so whoever’s interested, they’re not wrong.”
I certainly feel like there’s some truth to this otherwise Solskjaer would have flat-out denied it if Williams was 100% going to stay at the club beyond the January transfer window.
Personally, though, I think it’s a risk. If United let Williams leave, the back-up option at right-back is Timothy Fosu-Mensah. If Wan-Bissaka picks up any sort of long-term injury United would be in serious trouble.
Plus, Williams is a United lad through and through. He’s shown he’s good enough to play at this level and you can guarantee we’re going to need him at some point.
Hopefully, Solskjaer decides to keep Williams at the club. I’d get it if he were third or fourth choice but at this point in time, that’s just not the case…
