Solskjaer hopeful Longstaff will be on flight to Perth this Sunday following United move: report

Manchester United’s move for Harry Maguire is picking up pace, with the Evening Standard claiming that the Reds ‘hope’ their £70million bid will kill off City’s interest – thus giving them a free run at the Englishman.

However, we feel as though we’ve gone overkill on the Maguire stuff here at Old Trafford Faithful, and what we found most interesting about the Evening Standard’s article concerns another Englishman; Sean Longstaff.

Within the piece, James Robson writes that United are set to ‘formalise’ their pursuit of Longstaff this week, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘hopeful’ of including the midfielder on the flight to Perth for the start of the Reds’ pre-season tour this Sunday…

Well, United better act quick as we’re now just four days away from the squad jetting off to Australia and we’re yet to hear anything concrete from either party.

Following the departures of both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera over the last six months, there’s no doubt that United need at least one midfielder. Adding Longstaff would be an excellent start, while also further indicating that Solskjaer is keen on injecting youth into an ageing squad.

In terms of comparison, I’d liken Longstaff to Michael Carrick, although the Newcastle United man definitely has more mobility than the Old Trafford legend.

Hopefully, we hear something official over the next couple of days and Longstaff is aboard the plane on Sunday. Although right now, I do have my doubts…
