Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has offered us a fitness update on Edinson Cavani, with El Matador still working his way back.
Manchester United’s EFL Cup campaign is over at the first hurdle. Sadly, our Red Devils just were not good enough on the night. There were too many sub-par performances from the starting line-up which proved to be our eventual downfall.
One player who could have made a difference was Edinson Cavani. Sadly, the Uruguayan was deemed not fit enough to feature. Obviously, El Matador was in top form for us last season – but his pre-season and start to the campaign has been severely disrupted.
Before our game against West Ham kicked off yesterday, Solskjaer explained why the star who scored 17 goals last term didn’t feature vs West Ham.
Check out what Solskjaer had to say on Cavani here:
“He has not trained enough to be part of this. He is working hard and he knows his body better than anyone. He will put his hand up when he is ready.” Solskjaer told MUTV, transcribed by the Manchester Evening News.
Now I’m still not sure how far away Cavani is, but the good news is he’s back out on the training field and is working hard. He’s a player who performs at a high intensity every single time he takes to the pitch, so it’s up to United and Cavani to make sure he’s feeling fresh enough to do that when he returns.
Obviously, breaking into the side is going to be much tougher for Edi. We now have Cristiano Ronaldo playing through the middle, so I’m expecting El Matador’s minutes to be reduced drastically – which could be a good thing.
It means Cavani will be fitter and fresher when called upon, which tells us all he’s going to be an even bigger handful for opposing defenders.
I actually believe Cavani is going under the radar slightly. He’s going to be a valuable asset over the course of a long season and I can’t wait until he’s back fully fit and firing.
