Raphael Varane is back out on the training field.
Manchester United vs Liverpool is undoubtedly the biggest fixture on English shores. That rivalry will be renewed at Old Trafford this afternoon.
Going into the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sweating on the fitness of a few key faces – including Bruno Fernandes and Raphael Varane.
The former is a doubt for this one with a knock, while Varane has missed the last few fixtures due to an injury he picked up on international duty.
Solskjaer provided an injury update on the key star Varane this weekend. Although he refused to put a time limit upon his return, the Baby Faced Assassin did state that the Frenchman has been back out on the training pitch – which is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
Check out what the gaffer had to say here:
“He’s working hard,” Ole explained to ManUtd.com reporters.
“As I said, it’s hard to put a time limit on players that you don’t really know, but he’s been on the grass and who knows?”
I expected big things from Varane, but I genuinely didn’t expect him to be as good as he has been. The Frenchman cruises through games in a calm manner, providing some stability to a back four that seriously struggles without him.
We’ve conceded goal after goal in his absence and I fear that could continue this weekend against Liverpool without him. The question remains, is the ex-Real Madrid man fit enough to play here?
My guess is probably not, particularly after what happened last weekend when Harry Maguire was rushed back into the side. Solskjaer will likely adopt the cautious approach this time around and leave Varane either on the bench or out of the squad altogether.
Either way, it’s a massive positive that he’s not too far away from returning. We’re desperately going to need him over the course of this long season.
