Manchester United’s search for a centre-half continues, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to bolster his defence ahead of the new season.
Harry Maguire’s name is the one appearing most often on the back pages, with another vital update coming from The Sun. They write that Solskjaer is set for ‘crisis talks’ with executive vice-chairman Edward Woodward today (Wednesday) ahead of one final push to sign the 26-year-old centre-back.
The Sun adds that with Eric Bailly now injured in the long-term, a deal for Maguire is even more pressing – which is accurate.
Although only a small snippet from The Sun, it’s an important one. United’s defence has been awfully shaky over the last few seasons and there’s only so long that this club can persist with injury-prone players like the aforementioned Bailly and Phil Jones.
Although Maguire wouldn’t be cheap, it’d be a genius signing if the Old Trafford outfit could pull it off. Now I’m not saying he’s as talented as Virgil van Dijk but I genuinely do believe the effect ‘Slabhead’ will have could be similar to the part the Dutchman played at helping Liverpool get back to the top.
With just over a week to go until the deadline slams shut, Woodward will have to act quickly. Leicester’s asking price hasn’t really budged from the £80-90m that keeps being mentioned, so United know roughly how much they’ll have to pay…
