Solskjaer wants to sign two midfielders from top quality four-man shortlist: report

Manchester United could well be entering into a season-defining transfer season.

Around twelve months ago, failure to back Jose Mourinho eventually led to the self-proclaimed Special One losing his job. Hopefully, we don’t see lightning striking twice.

Whether the Red Devils back their man or not, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already drawing up his transfer plans. In a report from the Evening Standard, it is being claimed that our Baby Faced Assassin wants to sign two midfielders during the upcoming transfer window.

Four quality players are being considered by the Norwegian; Youri Tielemans, Declan Rice, Bruno Fernandes and Idrissa Gueye.

With Ander Herrera likely leaving, I’d love to see Fernandes come in and replace our Basque midfielder. The Portuguese has been in scintillating form this term, scoring 31 goals in 50 outings. Links to the 24-year-old also back up another report we covered earlier today.

Alongside Fernandes, it feels as though we’re crying out for a defensive-minded player to fulfil Nemanja Matic’s role. That leaves Rice or Gueye and honestly, I’d be fine with either. The former would probably cost more due to his age and the fact that he’s English, although the latter would bring more experience and mobility to the table.

I’m genuinely pleased to see the Red Devils linked with more, shall we say, ‘under the radar’ names rather than opting for the marquee, proven footballer. That strategy has failed us too many times recently (Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez’s names spring to mind), so it certainly makes sense to try something different.
