Premier League side Southampton are leading the chase to sign Brandon Williams on a loan deal.
When he burst onto the scene a couple of years ago, Brandon Williams made that left-back side his own. The Englishman would surpass Luke Shaw in the pecking order and finish the season strong.
The young man from Harpurhey had made an instant impression amongst the Old Trafford Faithful, as yet another homegrown talent was performing at the highest level.
Sadly, though, Williams would find minutes hard to come by in 2020/21. The rejuvenation of Shaw, coupled with the addition of Alex Telles, made it very difficult for Williams to even get a look-in.
Talks of a loan move for Williams have been pretty frequent. Now, thanks to Jonathan Shrager, we now know his likely destination at this time; Southampton.
The Premier League side are favourites to take the £65k-a-week (Sportrac) Man United star on a season-long loan, as Williams looks to get a kickstart to his fledgling career.
On paper, this seems like a brilliant move. Ryan Bertrand has left the Saints, leaving that left-back slot open for someone new. Williams could go to the South Coast club and make that spot his own – starting week-in-week-out.
Then, Williams would be able to come back to United another year older, another year wiser, with another twelve months of football under his belt. At that point, he can either consider switching back to his more natural right-back slot, or really push Shaw for the starting job over on the left-hand side once more.
Without wanting to get ahead of ourselves too much, Williams just needs to be playing games so United can gauge whether he has a future at the club. Hopefully, he does, as so far I’ve been mightily impressed with what the young man has offered.
