Southgate explains why Luke Shaw didn’t make it into his latest England squad

Manchester United’s season is over. It’s going to be a long summer of transfer rumours, but the Red Devils do need to carry out a major overhaul of this playing squad.

In the meantime, we do have the UEFA Nations League to keep us entertained throughout June. Although when Gareth Southgate announced his squad, I was somewhat disappointed to see only two United players included.

The big loser was Luke Shaw. Our 23-year-old didn’t make the cut despite what was by far and away his best season since making the move to Old Trafford.

Instead, Southgate opted to go with Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose in that area of the field. Judging by his latest comments, it sounded like a straightforward decision.

When asked about whether it was hard to leave Shaw at home, the Three Lions manager responded:

“No, I think Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose have been excellent.” Southgate responded, per The Metro.

“So at the moment they’re ahead [of Shaw], and they’ve played particularly well for us. They’ve been completely committed to the England shirt and really given everything for the England shirt over the last period of time.”

Firstly, this is damning on United’s part. Shaw won both Players’ Player and Fans Player of the Year awards just last week. He’s apparently been our best footballer over the last twelve months yet he cannot get in the England team…

That’s not a knock on Shaw, by the way, I actually like him. It’s tough to come back from the injury that he suffered and slowly but surely, the Southampton academy product is getting back to his best.

I think Chilwell is probably England’s best left-back at the moment, but I probably would have taken Shaw over Rose myself. Sure, I’m a little biased of course, but I’ve never been a Rose fan. Heck, he too has spent time aplenty on the treatment table.

Anyway, I guess we’ll be cheering on both Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford come the start of June when England take on the Netherlands in what could be an exciting encounter…
